A For and Against Essay by Clàudia Cabau

Advantages and disadvantages of using a bike as a means of transport

Nowadays one of the most usual things in our society is to travell all around the world. We love the holidays, so we can travel every place we want. But in the usual days, days when we have to go to school or to go to work, we use the car, or also the motorbike. And my question is: Do we really need to use these means of transport, or we can use an ecofriendly mean of transport, like a bike?

There are some advantages of changing the car for the bike. The most important, of course, is that the bike don't pollute the environment, and we can't say the same thing about the car or the motorbike. In addition, using the bike is an excelent way to get fit and avoid common problems like obesity or cardiovascular issues.

In spite of these advantages, there are some negative things abouts the bike. It's only useful if we have to go in near places, and it's probably that when we arribe we'll feel tired if we aren't fit enought. Consecuently, the bike can't be used in all the situations.

To sum up, I belive that the advantages are more important than the disadvantages. We must take care of the environment and using an ecofriendly mean of transport like the bike (when it's possible), is one thing that we can do.

An exciting trip

Last year I went to a beatiful trip with my parents. At first, we had decided to go to Scotland, but my mother changed her mind and finally we decided to go to Italy. It was in June, when I had finished my exams. The travel was really amazing for me, because I hadn't travelled in a plane before!

Italy can be confusing at first. The first day my family and I went to a hotel and, of course, everybody were speaking Italian. We didn't know the language, but my brother and I speak English and more or less we could understood everybody. The days passed and my family and I were terribly fascinated about all kind of things and places in that beatifut country. We visited Roma, Venecia, Mònaco, Pisa and a few cities more, and all of them were amazing. I belive that Venecia was the city which I like most because it is a really wonderful place.

But the weak passed and eventually the time to go home arrived. My family and I were extremely sad, but not at all, because we decided that we will return to Italy in a few years. In my opinion this trip was the best I have ever had, and Italy is one of the most beatiful places in the world.

Mrs Rosa Espejo,

I am writing to apply for the post of English teacher that was published last Sunday, 9 March, in the newspaper "La Mañana".

Moreover I love working with children and I am a hard-working person who implicates herself in children's education, I mean, for me that is not only a job, it is a passion.

Write an essay describing your best friend

I have decided to talk about her because for me she is a terribly special and caring friend. She is Helena.

Currently she is seventeen years old and she is studing as I in the high-school where we are doing our last course. She is a really hard-working pupil for this reason she gets good marks.

As a person, from my point of view, she is fantastic. First of all, Helena is a really loyal friend since when things have gone wrong she always has been there to help me. She is also a terribly curious and funny girl. On the one hand, she loves searching interesting things on the Internet and then she explains to us these. On the other hand, she always knows how to make me laugh because, as I, she is very crazy so we have lived lot of enjoyable experiences together.

Despite of that we have also had some arguments as both are narrow-minded people, but we always have fixed these. As we say, our relationship is like a brother's or sister's one in which you love so much the other person but you will sometimes kill the other one.

We know each other since we were really young, so fo me she is an amazing close friend and I wish we never lost our friendship!

The best trip that I have ever done

Last summer I went on holiday with my family, this was the best trip that I have ever done. I went, with my family, to visit USA, I stayed there for three weeks.

The first week we stayed in New York, we visited the empire state, Manhatthan, the river Hudson, the statue of Liberty, and the biggest skyscrapers in the world! New York is fabolous, when you were in the city center you feel very small, this was the extrangiest feeling that I have ever felt in a city. After we visited New York we went to the west coast, in the pacific ocean, in Los Angeles! During the stay in Los Angeles we did a small trip in San Francisco,we visited the famous bridge, and the hill-climbed hills, the most caracteristic things in San Francisco. In Los Angeles we visited an important museum and the most important monuments, then, at night, we went to see a basketball match, in the Staples Center, Lakers against Celtics one of the best basketball matches that that you can see in the world.

Finally we went to Washington, we saw the Capitoly, the Parliament and the white house and other important monuments. In the end we flew in a plane to Barcelona.

If I were rich...

If one dat I become a very rich woman I wouldn't keep my money in my bank account. Anywhere I would take it and pay some sharity organizations which help people with poverty problems, which help children with illneses and which take care about animals or environment.

If I were rich I would travel to other countries like China or India. There I would work like a volunteer in some organizations and firstly to help children who live in very bad conditions. I would take care about them until they could live better and go to school. Secondly, I would like to fight with environmentalists and ecologists against people who destroy the planet and make it dirty dropping all of the rests of his industries on rivers or oceans. Finally I would help vets who take care about wild animals that are in risk or sick.

If I had money to burn I wouldn't save it for me because I wouldn't be happy. I think that rich people can became arrogant when they have a lot of money. If I took it to help the others I would be the happiest woman in the world.

AN EXCITING TRIP

Two years ago I went to Cadaqués with my parents, with my cousins and uncles. I had never been there before, so it was very exciting. The trip had been terribly long so I got sick.

When we arrived, we were too lost because the house which we were going to stay was so far from the town. As soon as we found it, we left there our things and went to visit that beautiful place. We enjoyed walking through the streets near the sea. We also had lunch in a cute small restaurant. It was such a short day, but we could see how it was that site. The following days we did many activities in Cadaqués or went to the nearest towns. Actually, the day that I most liked was when we visited Portlligat. There, it was one of Dalí's houses. We paid to entry to the mansion. Dalí's home was so special and we could understand why he was self-centered and strange. I will remember his house the rest of my life. I felt in love with his paintings.

I had a fantastic holiday with my family, so one day I hope that I will return to the Cap de Creus.

A Narrative Essay by Pol Malagón

Imagine you could go anywhere in the world, or do anything in the world. Where would you go, and what would you do?

If I could go anywhere and do anything in the world, I would go to Thailand, the most exotic land that I have ever imagined.

In Thailand there are a lot of extensive jungles, with a lot of animals and plants that I have never seen. I love animals and exploring new things, so if I went there, I would do a lot of excursions to the jungle in order to watch the wild life and have some adventures. Moreover, Thailand is a very cheap country where you can buy a lot of things for the same price you eat in an ordinary Spanish restaurant, so in this fantastic place I would eat exotic delicious cheap food. Besides, People who live in Thailand are extremely educated and sociable, you can stay for a few days living in their houses and they don't let you pay for a hotel room because they like to open their doors to friendly people.

In conclusion, Thailand is a fantastic country, with a lof of places to visit, activities to do and with very educated people to deal with. Therefore, if I had that proposal to go anywhere in the world, I would choose to go to Thailand for sure.

Imagine you went somewhere in the world and did everything you wanted. Explain your experience

Two years ago I went on a trip with my class. I have never had such a great experience and I will never forget it!

We went to the capital of England, London. It was a really huge city with a lot of people in the streets, a lot of traffic in the roads and with so many places to visit! We visited a lot of interesting museums, enormous green parks, fascinating shows and many more things. It was so great! One day while all my classmates were taking the subway my friend Joan and I were lost! We had been looking at some strange people and then we couldn't see the rest of the class. We were absolutely petrified!

Eventually, we phoned Ramon, our history teacher, and later on he came quickly to rescue us! We stayed in London for one great week and we returned our homes, to our sedentary lives.

Write a story about an exciting trip you have had or someone you know has had.

Last week I went to Saragossa with my mother. We went there for two reasons: shopping and visiting some interesting places. Exactly, I went to Puerto Venecia.

We were talking in the middle of the square when suddenly I saw a famous actress called Amaia Salamanca. I told to my mum who she was and I looked for a piece of paper and a pen and I started to run after her. First, there were a lot of people around her but they slowly dissapeared, then it was my turn. I greeted Amaia and I asked her for an autograph. She smiled at me while she was signing on a card and she gave it to me. She wrote: "dedicated to this very cute girl". I stayed beside her for a while and I was quite amazed to read so.

In the end, I went back to my mother and I explained her all what she had said to me. I've never had such a grateful experience. I'll never forget it.

A Description by Anna Ricart

She is a seventeen year old girl from Tarragona. She is shortish, she’s got long straight fair hair and she usually combs it in a bob. She’s got dark skin and she is slim. She usually dresses up expensive jeans and jumpers.

She is very stubborn and she likes being the centre of the attention. She is an easy-going student and so ordinary, she shouts a lot and she hasn’t got any respect for older people or even her friends. She is a very talkative person and quite irresponsible. The worst thing of her is that she thinks that she is better than everybody and she really believes that she can do everything without any consequences.

I don’t like her attitude because she acts like a five year old girl and really annoys me talking to her. But, of course, she’s got something good: she doesn’t matter what the other people think of her. I respect her but she isn’t my best friend.

Narrative Essay by Cristina Olmo

WHERE WOULD I GO?

If I could go anywhere in the world, I would like to leave it. If I could do anything in the world, I would look for my freedom. If I could, every time I watched the clear sky I would run away so fast until I could fly. And then I would ride the sky like an eagle. In fact, I wish I were an eagle. I would spread my wings and I would fly around the world, going further than ever before, searching for the truly freedom that I have never found. If only I were an eagle, I would have the possibility to find the happiness.

But I am still a human. And I cannot fly because I have no wings. I cannot be free because I am not a wild animal. And I cannot find out the happiness because I am not a free soul.

Anyway, I won't lose my hope. I will continue waking up every morning and I will continue watching the sun rising through the window. Because I won't stop dreaming about it. Because, maybe, one day, I will be able to make my dream come truth.

Description by Cristina Olmo

MY BEST FRIEND

My best friend's name is Gerard, but everyone calls him Virgil. Although he came from Barcelona last year, we have become very, very close friends.

Virgil is a tall guy, with brown and wavy hair. His eyes are a bit small and they are brown, too. He always dresses similar clothes: a one-colored T-shirt with wide jeans and a dark jacket.

His behaviour is really characteristic; the adjective which describes him better is easy-going. He usually takes the things easy and he doesn't worry so much. But he is also slightly sensitive: he always thinks about the feelings of the others. And he can be sometimes a little shy.

Moreover, he has particular hobbies. He likes drawing very much, specially manga. He loves manga, and he has a large collection of mangas in his house. He draws amazingly.
Another thing he likes a lot is music. He loves music, and he plays the drums, too. He likes specially rock music, as Dire Straits, Pink Floyd or AC/DC. This last band was the reason why we started talking and became friends. It was because he wore an AC/DC T-shirt.

The truth is that we have many things in common and we have a very good time when we go out together.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing today to complain of the poor service I received from your company on June 12, 2008. I was visited by a representative of That Awful Company, Mr. Madman, at my home on that day.
Mr. Madman was one hour late for his appointment and offered nothing by way of apology when he arrived at noon. Your representative did not remove his muddy shoes upon entering my house, and consequently left a trail of dirt in the hallway. Mr. Madman then proceeded to present a range of products to me that I had specifically told his assistant by telephone I was not interested in. I repeatedly tried to ask your representative about the products that were of interest to me, but he refused to deal with my questions. We ended our meeting after 25 minutes without either of us having accomplished anything.
I am most annoyed that I wasted a morning (and half a day's vacation) waiting for Mr. Madman to show up. My impression of That Awful Company has been tarnished, and I am now concerned about how my existing business is being managed by your firm. Furthermore, Mr. Madman's inability to remove his muddy shoes has meant that I have had to engage the services, and incur the expense, of a professional carpet cleaner.
I trust this is not the way That Awful Company wishes to conduct business with valued customers—I have been with you since the company was founded and have never encountered such treatment before. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss matters further and to learn of how you propose to prevent a similar situation from recurring. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,

I would like to thank you for taking the time to interview me for the position of assistant field researcher on the Rats and Pumpkins Field Research Team. I know how busy your schedule is, and I greatly appreciate the time you cleared for the interview yesterday afternoon.

Anita is a rare type of student who combines exceptional natural ability with a willingness and eagerness to learn. Anita is able to help her peers with difficult mathematical concepts, but does so in a way that is both practical and non-condescending. Although she is aware of her natural ability in the area of mathematics, Anita is constantly challenging herself. A Narrative Essay by Anna Ricart

Imagine you went somewhere in the world and did everything you wanted. Explain your experience.

Two years ago I went to New York  with my family, we were there for a week. The first thing I saw it was one of those typical yellow American school bus then we went to the hotel and we started visiting the city.

We visited Central Park and I was absolutely amazed with the story of how the park was built, before that we had walked through the 5th avenue and there I found something very interesting, in the middle of that crowded city in that noisy street was a cathedral. The following days we had visited the World Trade Center and the place where the Twin Tower were, after that we had spend some time in China Town and it was so surprising because it really was like being in China. One day we had lunch in a restaurant in Little Italy, the food tasted very well. Another day we had bought some cupcakes in the most famous bakery in New York, Magnolia Bakery.

New York is an incredible city and I really like to visit it again. Once I read that every city has got a special word and I think that New York’s word is opportunity.

A Description by Quim Guasch

Write a story about an exciting trip you have had or someone you know has had.

Joe and me were sitting in a café having some tea. We were talking about what we could do the next summer. I told him that I was planning a short trip around the Mediterranean Sea. He explained me that two years ago, he went to a cruiser around the Mediterranean Sea.

He explained - "The first day the ship arrived in Géneva. In the same cruiser there were organized excursions, but I wanted to go ahead and visit the city alone. The second and the third days I stayed in the cruiser, in the swimming pool, having a party".
In this time Joe was explaining me his trip, the barman interrupted him asking if we wanted something else.
We thanked him but we told him that it was ok.
The fourth day -Joe continued- we arrived in Rome, and something fascinating happened. In front of the Coliseum, there was a road in which only two cars could pass...But there were four lines of cars driving on it!
The fifth day, we visited Tunise, it was the end of our trip. I showed the passport, I went down the cruiser, and there were 50 people who wanted me to go out with their cabs.
Finally, I chose one and we visited the city. The end of our trip was the return to Barcelona.
At the end, the next summer, Joe and me went into a cruiser but that time was awful!

Narrative Essay by Quim Guasch

Imagine you went somewhere in the world and did everything you wanted. Explain your experience.

It was a sunny day when I was having some beers in a café, with my friend.
We were near El Prat airport.
We were going to Florida.
It was hot.

We went inside the plane, and we sat down in those modern chairs.
She was next to me, and we were feeling nervous. I was nervous.
It was the first time I left Spain, and be nine hours flying with that Iberia's plane, made me feel a little scared. Although, we were having fun.

We arrived in the U.S.A.
We were in Florida: beach, sun, and very special moments were what we were going to find there.

Another beer, another smile.
That evening, one of the best Americans punk-rock group came in a pub. We loved their songs.
It was a fantastic concert.
After that, we went to sleep in a hotel.

I was happy. She was a very special person, and the moments that I spent with her, were so special too.

We stayed a short week in the city, visiting some monuments, going to the beach, having a drink, talking, kissing.

The week had become very short. I wanted to be there during all my life. With her.
Now, I don't know if what I wanted was to be there during all my life, or it was the fact to be somewhere with her during all my life.
I felt alive. But it was time to retorun home.

Sadness, maybe.

When the plane was landing, I said to her how happy I had been there.

Kissing her.

Advantages and disavantages of using a bike as a means of transport

Some people think that using a bike as a means of transport is the best idea. However, there are both arguments for and against it.
One advantage of moving around by bike, is that you do sport while travelling, which means that is a healthy option. A lot of people have health problems because they always use motorized transports. Another positive aspect, is that it's one of the most environmentally friendly way of travelling, so you don't benefit just yourself but the earth and its pollution. Moreover, if you use a bike, you don't need to waste time waiting for the transport collapses to be dissolved, as you get to squeeze through the cars. So, somehow, it's a quick option.

On the other hand, and opposing the last argument in favour, if you run out of time, to use a bicycle is definetely not the greatest idea -obviously, a motorized vehicle is faster. Another drawback is that it's not very comfortable, especially if you have to go far from where you are (unless you're very fit or you're used to it). Furthermore, you can't bring heavy stuff with you, otherwise you can't keep yourself balanced on the bike.

To sum up, I'd say that using a bike as a means of transport is a healthy way of travelling. However, it's not as quick and comfortable as a motorized vehicle.

A Narrative Essay by Sergi Gené

A story about an exciting trip I have had

Last summer I went to a trip I will never forget. Joan, Quim and I were staying in the hotel and we were watching TV. At 10 o'clock we left the hotel and we went to explore the mountain.

The mountain was absolutely fantastic. There were a lot of animals and plants and we could do a lot of photos. At first, we only wanted animals but then, we wanted plants too. Quim and I were taking photos to a plant when Joan found a very rare animal, we thought that we had to take a lot of photos to this animal and we did it. Next, we began to think that if we gave the photos to our friends the animal would be in danger. So, we decided to eliminate those photos. Finally, we made a very good lunch. We enjoyed a lot.

Five days later we returned to our house. In this trip I have felt very happy and I have ejoyed a lot. It was the most fascinating trip I have ever done. I want to go again to this mountain an take some photos again. The mountain has given me a really good experience.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in order to complain about the terrible service I have received in this restaurant. I would be grateful if you could explain me what it happened.

Firstly, I would like to complain about the lunch, the food was horrible, it seemed that you did not give us the best you have. Secondly, I want to tell you that the cost of food was so expensive if you think that you have not eatean a good food. In addition, I believe that it is necessary to talk about the time of waiting, I waited for the lunch for an hour. Eventually, I would like to complain about the floor, it was dirty and I saw a mouse.

I believe that if you want to improve the bussiness you will have to clean the floor, improve your food and charge less for your food.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faitfhfully

Sergi
